The Edge opened its doors in October 2000 with the help of many people in and around our community. Since then, we have grown to become an integral part of youth development and provision in Ballynahinch.
Here is an outline of our main programmes:
Drop-in: Tue & Thu 8pm – 10pm (Year 10 & up)
Drop-in is the foundation of all that we do at The Edge. It is a time to make connections and build relationships and where we can help young people find programmes that will meet their specific needs.
Drop-in: Fri 3-5pm (Year 8 & up)
This is a time to give those in year 8 & 9 a wee taste of what the Edge is like!
Boy’s Football & Drop-in : Wed 8 – 10pm
A time to come together to reach physical potential & become the next football star! Weekly practice & several competitions a year will keep the boys on their toes & give them an opportunity to demonstrate their skills.
This programme also hopes to extend to looking at issues which effect boys today.
The Edge aims to work alongside local High Schools to provide the best possible support for their students. We are involved in assemblies, RE, coaching and personal & social development courses.
Detached Youth Work
MorEdge: Fri 10pm – 2am
The Edge is on the streets. The aim of this project is to reach out to young people that don’t go to youth clubs and to build positive, trusting and challenging relationships with them. Our goal is to enable these young people to find the information and tools that they need to reach their full potential as individuals and members of their communities.
Tutoring: Thu 3 – 5pm
We are committed to helping young people reach their potential & one way we seek to do this is through after-school tutoring. Young people come along each week where they have access to computers & peace & quiet!
Beyond the Edge: Monthly, at Drop In
Beyond the Edge is the place where we go a little deeper and create a space to ask some of the bigger questions in life. It’s a multi-media event that uses live music, movies, drama, discussion, games, and even poetry to look at issues that we all have to deal with in life.
Outward Bound: Jan to Apr
This project is about bringing young people together from across our community to build bridges, face challenges and grow together while developing team work, leadership and initiative skills. (In cooperation with Outward Bound UK/NI.)
International Trips: Feb to Aug
For this project we take young people way out of their comfort zones and stretch them to the point that they will never be the same again. After 6 months training, planning and fundraising we take a group of about 18 young people to serve in a different country were they are encouraged to think of others as more important than themselves.
